On Thursday, May 15, 2025, Gachagua unveiled the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) during a brief ceremony in Nairobi, part of his broader political plan to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
According to a statement issued by Gachagua on Friday, a “fiery debate and a friendly fight” erupted in his village shortly after the party’s official unveiling.
The dispute centred around whether the party symbol is represented by touching the left or right ear.
“The elders, afraid of further escalation into the weekend, summoned me at night on a diplomatic mission for clarification,” Gachagua wrote on the DCP party’s verified X account.
Honouring the elders’ request, Gachagua said he traveled to the village early Friday morning in the company of Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge to settle the matter.
“In the esteem I hold my elders, and in line with the listening philosophy of our party, I have this morning clarified that it is the right ear,” he stated.
Gachagua added that he also took the opportunity to brief the villagers on current political developments and the upcoming grand launch of the party scheduled for June 4, 2025.
The humorous yet symbolic incident underscores the growing buzz around Gachagua’s new party, which claims to have registered over one million members within the first 24 hours of its unveiling.
The party says it is targeting 5 million members by the end of next week.
While the ear debate may appear trivial, it signals the strong grassroots enthusiasm building around the DCP, especially in Gachagua’s Mount Kenya stronghold.
Unveiled just a day ago, the DCP is positioning itself as a fresh political alternative in Kenya’s evolving landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
