The International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) on Tuesday gathered for a workshop dedicated to promoting and implementing the INTERPOL Silver Notice and Diffusion.
Silver Notice, is a tool developed by INTERPOL to help law enforcement agencies from member countries trace and recover criminal assets globally and to enhance regional cooperation in combating transnational organised crime.
Speaking at the opening, Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, affirmed Kenya's commitment to international policing cooperation.
“Silver Notice is not just a tool but a symbol of global solidarity against crime,” Amin said.
The Silver Notice was officially launched in January 2025.
“Kenya, as one of the countries participating in the pilot phase, has demonstrated its commitment to supporting efforts to disrupt criminal networks and ultimately reduce the negative impact of crime on communities worldwide,” he added.
The launch takes place at a critical time when transnational criminal networks are becoming increasingly complex, underscoring the urgent need for collaboration and innovative responses.
“Dismantling the financial networks that facilitate or sustain transnational organised crime, this initiative could prove to be one of INTERPOL’s most effective approaches yet,” Theos Badege, Director pro tempore of INTERPOL’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre (IFCACC) noted.
The forum was supported by German Development Cooperation through the GIZ global programme combating illicit financial flows and the GIZ programme on strengthening good governance in Kenya.
The launch follows the recent increase in crime in Kenya.
On April 14, 2025, detectives investigated cyber fraudsters who were targeting retired civil servants and defrauding them of their lump sum retirement benefits.
According to the DCI cybercrime unit, they said they said received complaints where retirees were being swindled of their cash by the fraudsters.
The police noted that the fraudsters were ‘spoofing banks’ customer care telephone numbers or using numbers that are similar to banks’ numbers, normally with just one different digit.
On the other hand, on April 16, 2025, two people were arrested following a gun drama incident in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The two included a licensed gun holder and a guard at a shopping mall.
