Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has defended President William Ruto over abduction remarks.
On May 12, the President spoke during a joint press briefing with the visiting Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb, revealed that there are no missing persons currently in the country as alleged by some quarters.
The President said all those who went missing have been reunited with their families.
His statement appeared to anger a section of Kenyans and the civil society, saying some of the victims of the protests have not found justice.
However, speaking on Wednesday, the CS said that some Kenyans misunderstood the President's remarks.
“I think many people misunderstood the President and I have seen that it has been taken out of context when he said we have been able to stop abductions is the same way we have told you we have been able to stop or reduce drug trafficking it does not mean that we were the ones doing it,” he said.
Murkomen said that the same way they have been directed to end illegal mining or other things affecting Kenyans, is the same way the President was giving directives.
The CS said that Ruto has been taken out of context many times when he makes some remarks.
“It was his direction, the same way he has directed that we must deal with drugs, illegal mining is the same way he has said we must deal with all elements related to abductions,” he said.
The CS said that under the executive directives, the security agencies are working to ensure everyone's safety by carrying out investigations.
He said that those found culpable of abductions will be arrested and charged in court.
Murkomen said the context in which the President spoke about abductions was about crimes in the country.
The CS placed the responsibility of unmasking the abductors on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
“Eventually, we will get to know who exactly committed what and where those abducted are,” he added.
The President, while speaking on abduction, reassured Kenyans that the cases of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances will not happen under his watch.
“All the people who disappeared or were abducted have been brought back to their families and their homes,” he said.
“I have given clarity and firm instructions that nothing of that kind will happen again.”
The Head of State was responding to a question from a journalist who had asked about the plans put by the government to ensure such cases do not happen again.
The journalist had cited reports from right groups.
