Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga/HANDOUT

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has condemned the assassination attempt on his deputy Oyugi Magwanga.

In a statement, Wanga called on the people of Homa Bay County to reject violence by all means.

She urged the people to support peace over violence at all times.

“I am deeply concerned by reports of an incident involving my Deputy Governor, Hon. Oyugi Magwanga, last evening," she said.

“I also appeal to the people of Homa Bay to remain calm and united during this difficult time. Let us reject violence in all its forms and stand together for peace, justice, and the rule of law."

The governor insisted that any incident requires urgent attention as it raises concerns about the safety and security of a leader.

Wanga called on security agencies to expedite a probe into the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

“This incident has come at a time when our county is still mourning the recent loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul.

“I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and impartially to investigate this matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” Wanga stated.

Magwanga on Monday recorded a statement with the police for investigations after his security officers engaged in gunfire exchange with unknown gangsters on Sunday.

He said the Sunday night incident occurred when a group of gangsters trailed his car to his home in Kabuor village in East Kamagak ward, Kasipul constituency, ostensibly to assassinate him.

The gangsters reportedly shot at his car twice with an intention of killing him on Sunday night.

According to Magwanga, he was returning to his home at around 9pm when he got intelligence information that some people were trailing him.

He decided to take a different route to his home because at that time he was still some kilometres away from home.

On his way home, Magwanga had alerted his security officers who were at home to go and receive him.

When the security officers were still travelling in his vehicle on the normal route he had diverted from, they met a gang that was armed with an unknown number of firearms.

“The gangsters moved a few meters away and began shooting ammunition towards the vehicle, thinking that I was in the car. It forced my security officers to shoot with the intention of repulsing the gang,” Magwanga said.
