Speaking during an interview with Egesa FM, a local radio station broadcasting in the Ekegusii vernacular, Gachagua said Kenyans, not the IEBC, will decide who becomes the next President.
The former Deputy President, who is currently forging an alliance with key opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, expressed confidence in the electoral process, saying he has no fears since commissioners do not elect leaders.
“I have no problem with the IEBC because the Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that the voter's decision at the polling station is final,” Gachagua said, just days after President Ruto nominated new IEBC officials.
In a candid interview, Gachagua urged his supporters not to be alarmed by the nominations and instead encouraged them to mobilise Kenyans to register as voters.
“We want to make sure that we win the 2027 presidential election with over 7.1 million votes so that it becomes impossible for anyone to manipulate the numbers,” Gachagua said.
President
Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon as the next IEBC chairperson, with
Anne Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor, Francis Odhiambo,
and Fahima Abdalla named as commissioners.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has referred the names to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to conduct the vetting process, which is scheduled for May 26, 2025, at County Hall.
Earlier, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka criticised the choices.
Kalonzo argued that the nominations lacked consultation with various political stakeholders, including the opposition.
During the May 12, 2025, interview, Gachagua said the opposition leaders are united in their plan to mobilise voters so they can secure an outright win in the 2027 presidential election.
He added that the opposition coalition will act selflessly and present a single candidate to challenge President Ruto to increase their chances of taking power.
“At the right time, we shall bring in experts to help us craft a formula to determine who becomes President, Deputy President, and Prime Cabinet Secretary, so that we can form a brand-new government,” Gachagua said.
“Our resolve is so strong that we will not break ranks. We cannot allow our selfish interests to override national interests. I don’t need to be President—I can take on another role if the formula favours someone else.”
