The son of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, Boyd Were, delivered a defiant message during his father’s burial service, declaring that the family will not be intimidated.

Speaking emotionally to mourners at Karabok Primary School, Boyd said his father’s killers had intended to instill fear and weaken the family, but instead, his death has made them stronger.

“We will not be intimidated. I know they killed my father to scare us, but we are strong and will remain steadfast in ODM,” Boyd said as he paid tribute to his father.

He affirmed that the ODM party remains strong in Kasipul Constituency, despite the tragedy that has befallen the family.

"As a family, we shall not fear anything and will soldier on with my father’s legacy,” he asserted, receiving cheers from mourners.

Boyd’s remarks come amid growing speculation that the family may seek to retain the parliamentary seat by fronting one of their own in the upcoming by-election.

Political leaders have urged the family to consider fielding a candidate to succeed the late MP, who was gunned down by an assailant on April 30, 2025.

When his father’s body arrived in Homa Bay on May 8, Boyd stood atop a vehicle and energised the crowd at Oyugis, declaring ODM’s readiness to carry on his father’s mission.

“Kendu Bay, hoyee! ODM, we are ready. Thank you!” he said.

During the requiem mass on May 7, Boyd delivered a heartfelt tribute, describing his father as his hero and guiding light.

“Dad, you were my hero, my guide, and my greatest strength. Your wisdom and unconditional love shaped the person I am today. You taught me the value of hard work, the power of kindness, and the importance of staying true to myself. Your laughter filled our home with joy, and your presence brought comfort, even in the hardest times. You cherished your family above all,” he said.

Boyd noted that his father never worked for recognition, but for the well-being of his family.

“You worked hard not for recognition but to give us comfort, stability, and hope. You always showed us how much we mattered. You taught me strength through gentleness and what it truly means to love unconditionally. Though you're no longer here in person, your spirit lives on in every lesson you taught and in every memory we shared. I miss you deeply, but I carry your love with me every day,’’ he said.

“Thank you for everything, Dad. I am forever grateful to have had a father so full of heart. You will always be in my heart. Go well, Dad. It is well. May your soul rest in eternal peace.”
