The National Police Service says it has made significant headway in the investigation into the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were.
Were was gunned down on April 30 near the Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly City Mortuary.
He was shot multiple times by a lone gunman who fled on a motorbike.
NPS said a specialised teams from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ (DCI) Homicide Bureau and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory were immediately deployed to the scene after the shooting.
“A comprehensive forensic investigation has since yielded critical evidence, including ballistic confirmation linking a recovered firearm to Were’s death. The weapon has also been connected to three previous robbery incidents in Nairobi and Kiambu counties,” NPS said in a statement.
The service headed by Inspector General Douglas Kanja said that through the swift deployment of forensic teams, use of advanced ballistics and public cooperation, the government has dismantled a gang linked to multiple crimes.
The police boss pointed out that to date, 10 suspects have been apprehended, several of whom are linked to a known criminal gang operating within the Eastlands area.
“Items recovered include two firearms, clothing linked to the suspects, and other forensic exhibits. Investigators also obtained CCTV footage and tracked movements from Parliament to the crime scene, offering crucial leads.”
The cooperation of Were’s family, friends, and the public has been instrumental in advancing the investigation, Kanja added.
He assured the public of continued diligence and transparency in pursuing justice.
Police have urged anyone with additional information on the Were murder to report via toll-free numbers 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203), with full confidentiality guaranteed.
Police said the gunman who shot Were had been trailing the MP's car from Nairobi CBD.
He stepped off a motorbike and walked up to the car when it stopped at a red light opposite Daystar University.
The shooter opened fire, killing Were on the spot.
An autopsy revealed that he was shot five times and that the bullets ruptured vital organs, including his heart.
His bodyguard jumped out of the car as the gunman hopped onto the motorbike that remained idling close by, and the rider sped off back to Nairobi CBD.
Witnesses said the bodyguard chased the motorcycle for a short distance before he raced back to the car to join the driver and rushed the bleeding MP to the nearby Nairobi Hospital.
A requiem mass for the legislator was held on Wednesday at the Consola Shrine in Westland ahead of his burial on Friday at Kachien village, Kasipul Constituency.
