Agriculture and Livestock Development CS Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday paid a courtesy call to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
During the meeting, CS Kagwe briefed Raila on key developments and emerging opportunities in the agriculture sector.
This is with a special focus on transformative initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Their discussions centered on the strategic leasing of sugar mills, an effort aimed at revitalising the sugar industry and ensuring long-term sustainability for farmers and stakeholders.
Raila expressed keen interest and support for these reforms, recognising their potential to spur rural economic growth and food security.
President William Ruto appointed CS Kagwe to head the Ministry of Agriculture.
Kagwe served during Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration and was famous during the COVID-19 period.
His experience in public service and insights on the politics of the country, having previously served as a senator, are viewed as crucial in navigating the challenges facing the Ministry.
Kagwe's management of the health crisis garnered both national and international recognition, positioning him as a prominent figure in Kenyan politics.
Additionally, during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, Kagwe played a crucial role in liberalising the communication sector, further enhancing his credentials for a potential return to Cabinet.
HIs return came at a time when the agricultural sector was a critical focus for the Ruto administration, with efforts underway to enhance food security, increase livestock productivity, and open new markets for Kenyan produce.
Kagwe has made reforms to leverage his extensive experience in the sector, support farmers, and implement innovative strategies to modernize agriculture.
