Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday attended the requiem mass for Winnie Wanjiru Thegu, the spouse of the Moderator of the PCEA, Rev Thegu Mutahi.

The PCEA church and Wanjiru’s family held the memorial service at PCEA St. Andrews Church in Nairobi, where church members and national leaders gathered to pay their respects.

The burial will take place at PCEA Kiamabara church, Mathaithi Parish in Tumutumu Presbytery, on Thursday, May 8, starting at 10am.

The church community and national leadership have been trooping to the moderator’s family during the time of grief, with many expressing admiration for Wanjiru’s strength, humility, and dedication to ministry.

Gachagua said he received news of Wanjiru’s passing with great sadness.

He said the late Winnie lived a spiritual life and inspired many who knew her.

She will be greatly remembered for her humility and straightforwardness, he said.

“Winnie was a strong pillar not only in her family but also in the community she lived in and the PCEA church where she fellowshipped,” Gachagua said in a post on X on May 3, 2025.

“She will be remembered for her strong family ties and commitment to service to humanity. I pass my deepest sympathies to her immediate family, friends, and the PCEA church.”

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, led senior government officials in mourning Wanjiru’s passing.

She said death had robbed the family of a wonderful matriarch, a caring mother, and a devoted spouse.

The CS said death had also robbed the church of a leader and faithful servant.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Miano described Wanjiru as a woman who served faithfully and left a lasting impact.

“Wanjiru, you served. We are comforted that God has called you home. To our 24th GA Moderator, in this time of sorrow, remember that God promises eternal life and peace. Rest well," Miano said on her X account.

She said Wanjiru's passing has left a deep void not only within her family but also among the PCEA fraternity and the broader faith community across the nation.

Wanjiru passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Kenyatta Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital.

The PCEA General Assembly has held a series of services to honour her life.

Consolation services were held from Sunday, May 4, to Tuesday, May 6, at PCEA St. Andrews Church in Nairobi, beginning each day at 4p.m.
