Police in Eldama Ravine have opened an inquest file into the death of a youthful man who was allegedly beaten and tortured to death by a mob at Timboroa market on suspicion of being a thief.

It's alleged that the man was extensively beaten, tied to a motorbike and dragged on rough ground, causing him severe injuries that led to his death at a local hospital.

The incident sparked tension and anger in the area where residents and family members have threatened to carry out protests to demand justice for the victim.

Eldama Ravine police boss Joel Chepkwony confirmed the incident and said they had recorded statements from three witnesses as part of investigations into the incident.

He said the attack happened on April 30, at 4pm at Timboroa market.

“The report we got indicate that he was found with stollen items and attacked by a mob. That action is illegal and we are investigating the incident for further action,” Chepkwony said.

He said a postmortem would be done on the body on Tuesday at the Eldama Ravine hospital.

According to a police OB, it was reported by one Joseph Ngechu, the proprietor of Paradise hotel, that his hotel entrance's metallic stepping ladder valued at Sh10,000 was stolen at night.

He checked the CCTV and two well-known people were seen carrying it away at midnight.

He mobilised his neighbours and two suspects were connered with the stolen ladder and subjected to a thorough mob beating resulting in serious injuries.

“They were rescued by police, rushed to Eldama Ravine Subcounty Hospital for treatment,” says the police report.

At the hospital, the victim, Evans Njoroge passed on.

Chepkwony said a few statements have been recorded to establish how the incident occured and the identity of perpetrators.

He said once the P3 and postmortem form is filled, plus the statements from witnesse aquired, police will pursue the necessary action.

The second victim of the attack identified as Joseph Gacheru was treated and discharged in fair condition after which he recorded a statement to assist with investigation.

“Apparently, he was not captured on the CCTV as alleged, therefore he is a witness. The exhibit was recovered from the deceased on that day and handed over to police,” the OB report states.

Chepkwony said Inquest file No.3/2025 had been opened into the deceased’s death.

The file would be taken to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further action.

“Mob injustice is illegal and we will act as per recommendations of the DPP,” Chepkwony said.
