Church lobby urges state to address challenges in SHA transition

The Kenya Coalition of Church Alliances and Ministries (KCCAM) has called on the government to urgently review the transition process from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund/Authority (SHIF/SHA).

In a press statement released on November 26, 2024, KCCAM expressed concern over the challenges that have arisen during the shift, which was aimed at advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

They said the government must urgently and systematically review the transitional process to ensure all Kenyans have access to affordable and reliable health care services,” the statement read.

According to KCCAM, the transition has left many Kenyans without functional health insurance coverage, forcing them to bear the high costs of healthcare amid prevailing economic hardships.

The group emphasized that affordable and reliable healthcare is essential for the well-being and productivity of the nation.

KCCAM further stressed that a sick population cannot contribute meaningfully to national development. They urged the government to systematically review the transition process to ensure all Kenyans can access affordable and dependable healthcare services.

The group commended the government for resolving the lecturer’s strike and urged them to obtain a long-lasting solution in order to avoid such disruptions in the future.

“We implore on the government to take urgent steps to stabilize educational institutions, which is critical to the nation’s future,” the statement read.

KCCAM also urged the state to address the new university funding model, which has been coupled with financial struggles being experienced in many public universities across the country.

They also called on the government to exercise transparency and accountability, stating that bold action is needed to restore integrity and confidence in governance.

The group also called on the president to prioritise fostering unity and reconciliation.

KCCAM lauded the government's efforts after the cancellation of the JKIA and Ketraco Adani deals following reports of a fraud case filed against the company’s chairman Gautam Adani in the United States of America.
