The Kenya Coalition of Church Alliances and Ministries
(KCCAM) has called on the government to urgently review the transition process
from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance
Fund/Authority (SHIF/SHA).
In a press statement released on November 26, 2024, KCCAM
expressed concern over the challenges that have arisen during the shift, which
was aimed at advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
They said the government must urgently and systematically review the transitional process to ensure all Kenyans have access to affordable and
reliable health care services,” the statement read.
According to KCCAM, the transition has left many Kenyans
without functional health insurance coverage, forcing them to bear the high
costs of healthcare amid prevailing economic hardships.
The group emphasized that affordable and reliable healthcare
is essential for the well-being and productivity of the nation.
KCCAM further stressed that a sick population cannot
contribute meaningfully to national development. They urged the government to
systematically review the transition process to ensure all Kenyans can access
affordable and dependable healthcare services.
The group commended the government for resolving the
lecturer’s strike and urged them to obtain a long-lasting solution in order to
avoid such disruptions in the future.
“We implore on the government to take urgent steps to stabilize
educational institutions, which is critical to the nation’s future,” the
statement read.
KCCAM also urged the state to address the new university
funding model, which has been coupled with financial struggles being experienced
in many public universities across the country.
They also called on the government to exercise transparency
and accountability, stating that bold action is needed to restore integrity and
confidence in governance.
The group also called on the president to prioritise
fostering unity and reconciliation.
KCCAM lauded the government's efforts after the cancellation of the JKIA and Ketraco Adani deals following reports of a fraud case filed against the company’s chairman Gautam Adani in the United States of America.
