Former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has asked President William Ruto to pick Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's replacement out of the Mt Kenya region if his impeachment motion against him sails through.
Ngunjiri, speaking on Monday during a morning TV show, said it would
be better to choose someone from another region.
“I want to urge the President. Samoei Arap Ruto, if Gachagua is removed, do not give Central that seat again. Because it seems that it is the region’s problem,” he said.
“Take it somewhere else so that the people of murima can live in peace”.
The comments come at a time when leaders from the Rift Valley region have stated that if the impeachment goes through, the next DP will come from the Central region.
On October 2, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi allayed fears of the Mt Kenya region losing the position if Gachagua is impeached.
He stated
that his replacement would come from the region.
“There is no doubt Murima is at the core of this government. No one has an issue with the majority of leaders from the mountain save for one. Even his replacement will surely come from the mountain. Sure bet,” he said.
In September, Kipkelion West MP Hillary Kosgei acknowledged the value of the Mt Kenya people but insisted on leadership change.
He said they are only keen on finding someone else to replace Gachagua.
"The people of Mt Kenya are good. The only thing we want is to remove him and replace him with another leader from the region," Kosgei said.
Gachagua is facing 11 impeachment grounds including inflammatory and inciteful utterances, undermining national unity, contradicting the president on critical matters, public attacks on judges and gross violation of the Constitution.
Other grounds are abusive and insulting words, amassing questionable Sh5.2 billion wealth, insubordination, undermining the president, bullying KEMSA officials and failing integrity tests.
