We have seen Njuri Ncheke disassociating themselves from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and recognising Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, as the region’s kingpin.
That is a direct manifestation of their desire to cut off the Meru and Embu from Gachagua.
They do not recognise Gachagua as their political leader. He does not speak for them.
It means that the Njuri Ncheke are no longer shy and are very deliberate about their political direction.
Most of the time, Njuri Ncheke’s events are about social or cultural matters, but now they are political. They are loud and clear.
The other thing is that it is the beginning of a calculated move by President William Ruto to cut Gachagua down to size.
Gachagua has always portrayed himself as the king of Mt Kenya and that he will hive off Mt Kenya support from Ruto. Gachagua has camped in the region, speaking in their language.
But now Ruto has come out as a master political player who wants to cut Gachagua down to a very small political dwarf.
The strategy we are seeing is Ruto dividing Gema as a community.
Secondly, he wants to remove the Kikuyu from the Meru and Embu equation.
Third, he wants to venture into the Kikuyu community and cut it into pieces.
That is why Kiambu, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murang'a, Kirinyaga and all those other areas may not speak in one voice in 2027.
That is not only meant to cut down Gachagua but also to ensure he is not influential anymore.
This could also be a pointer to the political sunset of Gachagua. He may be impeached. His impeachment may not go the full cycle. He may go to court to save himself.
But the other chance he has is to resign. With that, he can have a future, politically.
