Radio Africa Group FC is gearing up for a victorious comeback in the Intermedia tournament next season, following a strong finish as runners-up in the 2024 edition at the Jamhuri Primary School on Saturday.
Radio Africa FC narrowly fell 0-1 to invitational side Mapro FC in the hotly contested six aside finals, courtesy of Francis Mateiko's goal.
“We had a good game having trained well, but we faced an equally great team that hadn’t lost a single game in the tournament. Having fallen in the quarter-finals last season, we did well and we are looking forward to winning the title next season,” Radio Africa captain George Ajwala said.
RAG, finished joint top with defending champions Nation Media in Group C, having tied on seven points each.
Led by Captain George Ajwala, the Wastelands-based side beat Radio47 3-0 in the opener before overcoming Royal Media 2-1, followed by a 1-1 draw against Nation Media Group (NMG).
In the quarter-finals, the Gregory Mulemi-coached side beat Media Max 3-2 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw in regular time, with the defensive pair of Michael Indeku and Benjamin Oketh standing firm.
Goalkeeper Ken Aidha, who was man of the match, saved two penalties to see RAL through as John Mule converted the winning kick.
Against Royal Media in the semifinals, Apolo Ambani who finished as top scorer with four goals scored the lone goal for a 1-1 draw.
Edward Chindia, Hesbon Nyamari and Apollo converted their spot kicks for a 3-2 victory to book their final spot.
Meanwhile, Mapro who had topped group B, defeated NA Installers 1-0 in the quarterfinal before seeing off Nation Media FC 2-1 in the semi-final.
Radio Africa FC narrowly missed out on victory, falling 0-1 to invitational side Mapro FC in a fiercely contested six-a-side final, with the decisive goal scored by Francis Mateiko.
The champions went home to Sh50,000 richer, while Radio Africa was awarded Sh30,000.
Royal Media FC were awarded Sh0,000 for claiming the third position after defeating Nation Media FC 3-2 in the third-place playoff decided on post-match penalties.
The tournament attracted 14 teams and was sponsored by leading entertainment company Multichoice.
The event was strategically organised to engage members of the media in anticipation of the 2024-25 English Premier League kickoff.
It also aimed to foster stronger relationships with the media while highlighting Multichoice's commitment to delivering premium sports content.
The participants were later treated to a watch party at the Orchid Lounge along Ngong Road.
