Police retreat as youths surround their vehicle in Nairobi CBD standoff

They chanted "we are peaceful" as the police officers watched.

Anti-Finance Bill, 2024 demonstrations carried the day in the Nairobi Central Business district on Thursday.

During the demonstrations, there was heavy security with police from various units deployed to man and ensure protesters did not access certain areas.

As the protests went on, a section of youths, in a video seen by the Star surrounded a police vehicle which had a team of officers onboard.

The youths are then heard first chanting "Igwee" as they move their hands up and down to salute the officers.

They then switched to chanting "we are peaceful" as the Administration Police officers watched.

The officers then requested to reverse their vehicle and the protesting youths were seen making their way for the officers to move.

Despite this show of peaceful engagement, there have been instances where police have been forced to use teargas to disperse the protesting youths.

They have also engaged in running battles. 

This is the second round of demonstrations in the country's Capital but the first in the other towns and cities that have joined in calling out the punitive Bill.

They include Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Nanyuki, Nyeri and Kisii, among other parts of the country.

Mombasa held its protests on Wednesday, amid heavy rains.

Many shops in Nairobi remain closed and very few people were in town.

Trucks full of anti-riot officers were packed outside parliament buildings.

Parliament Road and City Hall Way were also barricaded while no motorists or pedestrians were allowed to use the routes.

Youthful Kenyans took charge of the Occupy Parliament to demonstrate against ‘punitive’ tax proposals in the Finance Bill, 2024.

Days before Tuesday’s protests, youths made a rallying call on social media using the hashtag #OccupyParliament urging Kenyans to turn up in numbers for the protests.
