Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Saturday launched the Mume ni Kazi Foundation founded by Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina.

The foundation is dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on quality education,  decent work and economic growth.

The DP lauded the initiative saying it is key in transforming the lives of many Kenyans who are not only vulnerable but also lack opportunities to explore their talents.

"I ask you the people of Kirinyaga to take keen note of the work Hon Njeri is doing for the orphans and vulnerable people who need help to make their lives better. That is the kind of leadership we want," he said.

"As a leader,  I am taking mentorship seriously on my end and I am keen on mentoring young leaders like Njeri so that they can become better leaders of tomorrow."

The DP spoke at Kutus Primary School, in Kirinyaga County, where the launch was held.

He challenged MPs to focus on their mandate and channel their energies into serving the people who elected them into office.

Njeri on her part thanked the Deputy President for gracing her event saying the foundation seeks to make life of Kirinyaga residents better.

The County MP said she seeks to ensure all people have access to education so that in the long run they can attain economic growth.

"We aim to create a county where every individual has access to education that nurtures their potential and where economic growth is inclusive and sustainable, leaving no one behind," she said.

Njeri expressed her loyalty to DP Gachagua saying she will not join a team of leaders attacking the deputy president as she recognises him as the topmost leader of the Mt Kenya region.

She told off those criticising the DP saying they would not allow that to continue.

"I will never disrespect the Deputy President of this republic of Kenya. I am honoured and humbled for the continued mentorship he has given me," she said.

"I appreciate your work. Kirinyaga residents are solidly behind you. You are our leader. We remain solid with you."

The Mume ni Kazi Foundation seeks to promote and enhance quality education, facilitate skills development,  support entrepreneurship, and promote gender quality and economic growth.

"We want to forge partnerships with governments, NGOs, educational institutions, businesses, and local communities to leverage collective expertise, resources, and networks and make the lives of our people better," MP Njeri said.

"At the same time, we will embrace innovation and technology to develop scalable and sustainable solutions that address the evolving challenges in education and economic development."

She added that they will also empower communities to actively participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs to ensure relevance, ownership, and sustainability.

"We are committed to advocating for policies and investments that prioritize education and sustainable economic development on local, national, and global levels, raising awareness about the importance of SDGs 4 and 8," she stated.

MP Njeri revealed that so far, over 200 women groups in Kirinyaga have benefitted from the NGAAF Kitty and she seeks to ensure more are empowered soon.

"I have visited more than 200 villages to empower our women with cheques from the NGAAF Kitty. More than 3,000 students have received bursaries. We have also disbursed Sh5 million to special needs students," she said.

"Education is the great equalizer. I hope there comes a day when education will be free for all. I am a champion for that."
