A house help who allegedly stole over Sh2 million from her Chinese employer in order to reportedly build a house for her grandmother in Vihiga has been arraigned.

An application filed in court by Corporal Francis Mwenda says that Tracy Tsindondo Amutamwa is being investigated for an offence of stealing by a servant.

Mwenda wants Milimani senior principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe to grant him 10 days to complete his investigations having arrested Tsindondo last Friday at Runda Estate at around 1922hours.

"That the matter under investigation was reported by Yu Yanping, a Chinese business lady who operates her business in the country," the court documents read.

Yu told police that she recently discovered that she had been losing money in her house and decided to arrange all the money she had in the house in a certain manner to trace the flow of the loss.

Thereafter, between June 3 and 6, she discovered that a total of 750 US dollars was missing.

The only outsider who has unlimited access to the house is her house help Tsindondo, she said.

Upon questioning her, she admitted that she has been taking money on diverse dates and giving it to her boyfriend.

Upon doing a proper audit of her money,  Yu realized that she had lost 20,000 US dollars.

Tsindondo also told her employer that part of the money she had stolen from the house was used to build a house for her grandmother in Chavakali in Vihiga county.

Upon investigations, she was interrogated and her statement was obtained in which she stated that she started stealing her boss's money on March 15 and admitted to having stolen a total of 11,800 US dollars from Yu.

The court further heard that Tsindondo admitted to having been stealing the money in bits and giving it to her boyfriend who would send her share on Mpesa after exchanging it for Kenyan shillings.

The investigating officer recovered Sh100,000 from her mpesa out of the Sh222,000 her boyfriend had sent to her phone.

Officer Mwenda added that he needs time to get M-pesa statements of both the suspect and her boyfriend from Safaricom.

"Tracing and arresting the suspect's boyfriend with a view of recovering the stolen money and also visiting Vihiga to see and document the house alleged to have been building using the proceeds of crime needs time," Mwenda told the court.

The magistrate was urged to detain Tsindondo at Gigiri police station.

The court will rule on Tuesday whether Tsindondo will be detained for 10 days pending probe.
