Governor Johnson Sakaja has assured traders in Dagoretti that construction of Mutuini Market will be completed in August this year.
The governor made the revelation after a site-seeing tour of the market to inspect progress of the construction.
Construction of the Sh235 million market whose initial cost was put at Sh244 million was launched on February 7 by Sakaja.
“Visited ongoing projects and I’m very impressed with the pace and progress at Mutuini Market whose construction commenced in February. We intend to complete the Market in August and open doors to the hundreds of traders and businesses that will benefit from this project,” Sakaja said on X.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Sakaja said the market would “put an end to the residents’ grievances, which have been going on for the past four years”.
He also said the local community including reformed drug addicts and criminals would be employed as casuals for the construction of the market.
According to the county government, the new market is expected to serve around 3,500 people and generate revenue for the county.
It will include social amenities and other extra features like cold storage room for preservation of perishable goods like tomatoes.
The cold room feature will also be beneficial to the surrounding butcheries served by the nearby slaughterhouse.
During his visit on Friday, Sakaja revealed that construction of the Dishi Kitchen in Mutuini Primary School is also progressing well.
“The completion of the seven new kitchens, (Donholm, Mutuini, Uhuru Gardens, Dandora, Zawadi in Kamkunji, Ndururno in Mathare) shall lead to an increase of the number of children being fed from 200,000 daily to more than 300,000,” he said.
The Dishi Kitchen is part of Sakaja’s Dishi na County programme that provides midday meals to learners in public primary schools at subsidesed cost of only Sh5.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the seven new kitchens was done on March 28 this year marking the third phase of the initiative.
The Dishi na County programme has been largely credited for increasing school enrollment in Nairobi county to over 310,000 kids from the initial 250,000 since its inauguration in June 2023.
Phase one saw the construction of 10 central kitchens followed by phase two in January this year with the operationalisation of an additional 10 central kitchens.
Sakajas plan is for each Subcounty in Nairobi to have its own central kitchen.
