President William Ruto has reassured the residents of Bungoma that the Masinde Muliro stadium which has been delayed for several years will be completed as planned.
Speaking during the Madaraka day celebrations in the county,Ruto also issued a warning shot to individuals he said have acquired some pieces of land around the facility.
Without providing any specific actions, Ruto told the particular owners to wilfully vacate.
"Let me ask the people around this stadium especially those who have acquired the public land, please tuheshimiane kidogo (let us respect one another). Kila mtu mwenye ako na shamba hapa ambaye anajua ni ya serikali, polepole funga virago vyako (Everyone who owns a public land here should slowly begin vacating),” Ruto stated.
He said the government wants to redevelop the entire area for public use.
“Hatutaki kusukumana na mtu na hatutaki vita na mtu, tunataka tuheshimiane kwa sababu mali ya uma ni ya wananchi wote,” he added.
(We do not want to force anyone out and we do not want fights with anyone, we want to respect one another because this is a public resource is for all Kenyans)
Ruto said the military officers who have been undertaking the construction will not leave the site until it is completed.
“The people in charge especially the military officers will be here until this stadium is completed and made available for the people of this county and for Kenyans,” he said.
“I know there is plenty of sun elsewhere, but I just want to promise you that this will be the last time you will be beaten by sun, the next time you come here, this entire place will be covered properly,” he said.
The head of state at the same time expressed his commitment to having the new airport at Matulo finished.
He said he has held discussions with the county leadership to have it to acquire land with the national government's responsibility being to facilitate the expansion of the runway and terminal.
"You will no longer have the need to come to Eldoret, you will find catch the plane here so unless you are going for a date in Eldoret or Kisumu you can go," he said.
