Azimio leader Raila Odinga has explained why some of the leaders elected under his coalition accompanied President William Ruto to the United States.

In a statement on Wednesday, Raila said the leaders, who include Governor Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) travelled on the invitation of the US government.

National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi is also part of the delegation.

The Azimio leader said they also have the permission of the coalition to accompany President Ruto.

"All Azimio leaders accompanying the President were invited by the US government and have his and the coalition's permission to join the President on this mission, in line with established democratic traditions and the wider interest of the Kenyan nation, that Azimio stands for," Raila said.

His remarks come after a section of leaders questioned the Azimio leaders' presence in Ruto US state visit.

The former Prime Minister urged the leaders to make good use of their visit and help the United States understand issues that matter to the people of Kenya.

"Including increased trade and investment, better healthcare opportunities locally, fighting corruption, creation of jobs and access to information technology by the youth," he added.

President Ruto is in the US for a state visit.

Several leaders are accompanying the Head of state including civil society groups representatives, business representatives and the media among others.

On Wednesday, Ruto spent a good part of his day at the Capitol Hill where he held engagements with different Congressional groups, as well as the Bipartisan Congressional leadership.

While in Atlanta, Georgia, President Ruto also held a meeting with Kenyans living in the United States, among his other engagements.
