Nairobi lawyer charged with car theft, released on Sh200,000 cash bail

A Nairobi lawyer has been released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 after being charged with stealing a car.

According to the charge sheet presented in court, Reuben Urbanus Kioko allegedly stole the car in March 2023.

"Rueben Urbanus Kioko on an unknown date in March 2023, at Capitol Hill Towers within Nairobi County stole a motor vehicle make Hyundai valued at Sh300,000 property of Muus Kenya Limited," the prosecution told the court.

Kioko appeared before a Milimani Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe on Thursday and denied the charges.

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has listed three witnesses so far.

Kioko was arrested on April 30, 2024.

Magistrate Shikwe set the mention date for May 30, 2024.

Elsewhere in Meru, a lawyer and a mechanic were charged with three counts of alleged forgery and conspiracy to defraud a businessman of land valued at Sh4 million.

Lawyer Jackson Mukaria Muriungi is alleged to have forged a letter of consent for a change of ownership of the said plot to read Hudson Mutugi Francis.

Muriungi used to be an employee of the Meru County government at the time.

He then allegedly made the said fraudulent letter, purporting it to be a genuine document issued by the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, housing, Urban Development and Public Works.

When they appeared before Meru Chief Magistrate Dominica Nyambu, the two suspected pleaded not guilty.

Muriungi was released with Sh500,000 cash bail or surety of Sh1 million.

The matter will be mentioned on July 18, 2024.
