India donates Sh130m, relief consignment to Kenya to help flood victims

They have donated 22 tons of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief items

The government of India has donated $1 million (Sh130 million) in humanitarian assistance to Kenya after floods wreaked havoc.

India also extended sympathies to the country after the heavy rains that resulted in floods across the country left a trail of destruction.

"The Government of India is extending humanitarian assistance to the Government of Kenya in the wake of the devastation caused by the floods that have hit the country, 38 out of 47 counties have been affected," a statement read.

India further donated a relief consignment that is being airlifted to the country today (Tuesday).

They have donated 22 tons of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief items (HADR).

They include tents, sleeping bags/mats, blankets, power generation sets, ready-to-eat meals, basic sanitary utilities and hygiene kits to provide immediate succour to Kenyans.

The consignment also contains about 18 tons of medical aid, comprising essential life-saving drugs and surgical equipment required for critical care and wound management.

It also includes items required for baby food, water purification, menstrual hygiene, and repelling mosquitoes, malaria and dengue diagnostic kits, anti-venom treatment and several types of testing kits that can be readily deployed on the ground.

According to the statement, the Indian Naval ship INS Sumedha reached Mombasa on May 10 to extend immediate relief comprising one HADR pallet and two medical pallets.

"The assistance to Kenya is a reiteration of our strong and friendly relations with the country, in the spirit of South-South cooperation and our commitment to keep Africa on top of our priorities, as spelt out by PM Narendra Modi," the statement read.

It also announced that 75 Kenyans are still missing, while another 188 injured so far.

A total of 57,120 households have been displaced and this has directly affected approximately 285,600 people.

The ministry said that the heavy rains have so far impacted more than 412,336 people.

Approximately crops on 168,092 acres of land have been destroyed and 8,722 livestock dead, as a result of the floods.

The government has continued to ensure the safety of all Kenyans is guaranteed. It has also continued to issue updates on affected areas, as well as advising Kenyans on safety measures.
