The United Democratic Alliance party is set to kick off phase one of the grassroots elections this Friday from 9 am.

The polling stations will be closed at 3 pm.

Party officials in a press conference on Thursday said all was set for the exercise even as they billed it as one of a kind in Africa.

"Our election is going to be electronic. The first in the country, the first in Africa. There is no party in Africa which has done electronic voting. It is going to be seamless, free and fair," Eng Anthony Mwaura, Chairperson National Election Board, said.

The grassroots polls will be held in five counties; Nairobi, Busia, Narok, West Pokot and Homa Bay.

In Nairobi, the party has 853,000 registered members, Homa Bay (141,000), Narok (233,000), Busia (141,000) and West Pokot has 208,000.

A major face-off is expected in Nairobi where Governor Johnson Sakaja will face off with Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.

Sakaja will be casting his vote at St. Georges Primary School at 10:15 am.

Mwaura warned that anyone caught in voter bribery and rigging attempts will stand disqualified.

He said the party has set aside two choppers to facilitate movements and transportation of election materials in areas affected by heavy rains.

"We are good to go. We ask our voters to be very peaceful, and desist from, violence and voter bribery. Our elections must be very orderly as in the past," Mwaura said.

The UDA party procured 10,000 gadgets for the exercise and each cost about $75 (Sh10,000).

On Tuesday, the Elections Disputes and Resolution Committee (EDRC) chairperson Joy Mdivo in a statement said that any complaints that may arise from the party grassroots elections must be filed within 48 hours after the close of polling.

"Complaints will be lodged electronically via the email provided on the UDA website that is [email protected]," she said.

She urged members of the ruling party and especially candidates to familiarise themselves with the governing rules. She said the rules are available on UDA's website.

The second phase of the grassroots polls will be on June 22,  in 13 counties, the third phase will be held on August 10 across 15 counties and the final phase on August 24, in 12 counties.
