Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja finds himself embroiled in controversy following revelations by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu of more than Sh20 billion in irregular and questionable spending.

This, coupled with allegations of financial impropriety raised by some Nairobi MPs and MCAs, paints a concerning picture.

While these are currently allegations, Sakaja cannot afford to dismiss them with a wave of his hand. The sheer volume of accusations, both from Gathungu and elected officials, demands serious attention.

The governor was elected on a promise of change, good governance and a fresh approach. Nairobi residents deserve leadership that prioritises transparency and accountability.

Sakaja must take a two-pronged approach. First, a thorough and transparent investigation into the flagged spending is crucial.

This will not only address the immediate concerns but also demonstrate his commitment to responsible financial management.

Second, the governor needs to proactively engage with the public and elected officials, addressing the allegations head-on and outlining measures to ensure fiscal prudence in the future.

Nairobi is a complex city with immense potential. It deserves a leader with a clear vision who can navigate its challenges and capitalise on its opportunities.

Sakaja can still fulfil that role, but only if he decisively addresses the financial concerns currently casting a shadow over his administration.

The time for reflection is over; the time for action is now.
