One person has lost his life and a child is missing following heavy flooding in Nairobi, the City County government has said.

In a statement on Sunday, the County Government said the search for the child is ongoing.

"Following heavy rains witnessed in Nairobi County last night, we have witnessed impact and subsequent flooding in the city. Regrettably, we confirm the loss of one person and there is an ongoing search for a child in Kibra subcounty," it reads.

It said the county's emergency teams, led by the Disaster Management are working around the clock to ensure supply of relief efforts to affected areas.

The acting County Secretary, Patrick Analo said they are working with the National Government, National Police Service and the Red Cross to guarantee the well-being of the affected individuals.

Analo called on residents who have built structures and buildings on riparian reserves to vacate, as the county is set to begin to open up rivers where they have encroached.

"We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their property, especially those living near riverbanks.

"Please heed to all warnings and advisories issued by the relevant authorities and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas."

The Nairobi County Government has also mapped areas affected by the overflowing of Ngong River, Mau Mau River and a bridge in Mukuru Kyaba slum in South B. The Kiambiu informal settlement in Starehe sub-county has also been affected by the same.

The County Secretary also noted that while some city roads had been affected by the floods, the drainage around Raila Odinga Road and the Lang'ata Road roundabout (near T-mall) is now functional.

Analo stated that the Mobility and Works team are working closely with Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA and Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to ensure roads are passable.

Over the weekend, vehicles got stuck in flooded waters due to flooding.

City residents shared videos and pictures of such vehicles, which were a result of water covering various road surfaces.

The floods swept several vehicles, as residents called on the County Government's intervention.
