Woman gives birth in court after acquittal in son's murder

A woman gave birth at a Machakos court shortly after she was acquitted in her son's murder case.

Virginia Maingi experienced labour pains immediately she was set free by the Kithimani Law Courts in Yatta, Machakos County on Monday and gave birth to a baby girl.

Maingi had been charged with murdering her 19-month-old baby at Kinyaata location in Yatta.

She was arrested by police officers from Matuu police station on March 25 and arraigned at Kithimani Law Courts on March 27.

Maingi had been in detaination at Matuu Police station since then following court's directive.

She was on Monday presented before principal magistrate Paul Matanda who acquitted her of the charges.

According to the court, prosecution had established that the woman's son died from starvation.

Shortly after her acquittal, the Maingi went into labour at the court premises prompting court officials to alert nurses at the neighbouring Kithimani dispensary.

The nurses rushed to court and helped her deliver a baby girl.

She was together with her newborn taken to her home in Kinyaata village by officers from Matuu police station aboard a police land cruiser.
