Senior officials from Mount Kenya University last week led hundreds of lawyers in participating in the Wakili golf tournament.

The event which took place at the Machakos golf club was used by the university to showcase its online Master of Law programme.

The university noted the programme is offering practising lawyers flexibility to pursue postgraduate studies.

MKU Vice Chancellor Deogratius Jaganyi said that the university offers students an environment that offers them an opportunity to balance academics with extracurricular activities including sports.

“At Mount Kenya University, we pride ourselves not only in our commitment to sporting excellence but also in our dedication to providing innovative educational opportunities,” Jaganyi said.

Jaganyi said the unique Master of Law programme is delivered online and is self-paced.

"This program offers flexibility and accessibility, allowing individuals to pursue advanced legal studies while balancing their professional and personal commitments," he said.

He said the university is looking forward to welcoming a new cohort of students during the upcoming September intake as the institution embarks on its transformative educational journey.

He noted that MKU’s Law School had emerged as one of the fastest-growing and most reputable law schools in the country.

According to Jaganyi, Mount Kenya University has risen to the top seven universities in Kenya and second best private university in the country in recent education rankings.

This, he said, is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the faculty, staff and students at the institution.

“We are committed to providing world-class legal education that prepares graduates to excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions to society,” Jaganyi said.

MKU Council Chairman Vincent Gaitho noted that playing any sport helps one to relax and even improve productivity at work.

Gaitho noted that the Wakili Golf Day had given the university and its former students a platform to engage as they both sought to enhance legal training in the country.

Gaitho further noted that the university had invested heavily in distance learning, which would make it easier for law students to access such programmes as the online Master of Law programme that the university launched last year.

On his part, the dean of MKU School of Law Wilfred Mutubwa noted that the online programme offered lawyers the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies while still continuing to manage their legal practices.

“To the practising lawyers, we have a programme for you. The busy lawyer who wants to join the class from the Hague, Johannesburg, Mwingi or Mombasa and study at the top law school in Kenya, we offer flexible open distance education in law and you will have completed your studies within two years or four semesters, at a cost-effective rate,” he said.

A lecturer at the university and captain of the MKU Golf team Consolata Maitha said the institution through such initiatives as the Campus Golf Club aimed at giving an all-around experience to students while they are pursuing their studies.

“Wakili Golf is an exceptional event that brings lawyers and their friends together for out-of-court experience,” Maitha said.

She said the MKU- School of Law through the Dean and supported by the University has established a Campus Golf club which gives the students the experience of law in class and experience with lawyers on the course.

This, she said, brings information about the institution's programmes and the benefits to people of interest.
