Nairobi to experience heavy rains Sunday evening – Met

Thw weatherman said some areas will receive rains of up to 100mm.

Parts of Nairobi will on Sunday evening receive heavy rainfall, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said.

The weatherman said parts of Nairobi including Embakasi, Lang'ata, Dagoretti South, Dagoretti North, Westlands and Roysambu will experience rainfall of up to 100 mm.

"Rain ahead for Nairobi! Stay dry and safe, folks," Kenya Met said on X.

It said Lang'ata and adjacent areas will receive rainfall of up to 20mm, Dagoretti South will receive rainfall of up to 100mm while Embakasi will have rain of up to 20mm of rain.

Other areas forecast to receive rain include Roysambu up to 35 mm, Westlands will have rainfall of up to 40mm while Dagoretti North will have rains of up to 70mm.

On Saturday, the weatherman advised Kenyans from across the country to prepare for heavy rainfall that will run until Thursday.

Director of Meteorological Services David Gikungu said the heavy rains would begin on Saturday and end on April 18, 2024, at 6pm.

He said heavy rainfall would start on Saturday over several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including the Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands, Coast and the northern sector.

The forecast said heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24hrs would be experienced over Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including the Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands and South coast on April 14, 2024. 

Gikungu added that the rainfall is likely to intensify from April 15 to 18, 2024 to more than 50mm in 24hrs along the Coast.

"The heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the Southeastern region."
