New Chief Registrar of Judiciary to be sworn in
The new CRJ Hon Frida Mokaya will be sworn in today, Monday 25, March 2024, at the Chief Justice foyer at 9:30 am.
Her appointment was announced on March 19.
She began her journey in the Judiciary in February 1997 serving as a District Magistrate II (Prof) at Kisii and Kisumu Law Courts until November 1999.
Between November 1999 and December 2003, she served as a Resident Magistrate at Kisumu and Winam Law Courts.
A Milimani Magistrates Court will today rule on a bail application involving former PC Davis Chelogoi after he denied charges in a Sh1.35 billion Land fraud case.
Former PC Chelogoi to know his fate
Chelogoi was detained on Friday after pleading not guilty to six charges he is facing.
He is accused of defrauding businessman Ashok Rupshi Shah and Hitenkumar Amritlal Raja of a parcel of land measuring 7.390 hectares situated in Lower Kabete Road valued at Sh1.3 billion.
The former administrator had been directed to appear in court on Thursday morning for plea-taking but failed to show up.
Principal magistrate Dolphina Alego issued another arrest warrant before Chelogoi finally appeared in court. He pleaded not guilty to six counts of fraud, conspiracy to defraud and forgery.
His lawyer Tom Ojienda had asked the court for lenient bond terms saying Chelogoi was not a flight risk but the state opposed the bond application as did lawyers representing the complainant Ashok Shah who claims his land was forcefully taken away.
Tecra Muigai Inquest
The court is also expected to give directions in the Tecra Muigai inquest case after Magistrate who was handling the matter was transferred to Kibera Law courts.
Omar Lali is yet to give his testimony in the matter.
Last year, Tecras mother Senator Tabitha Karanja testified saying she suspected Lali could have had a hand in her daughter’s death because she could have refused to continue financing him.
Tabitha told an inquest into the mysterious death of Keroche's heiress that it was Lali’s greed that caused her daughter’s death.
She was recalled in court after Lali made the application in a bid to cross-examine her regarding her testimony in court saying when she testified, he was absent and was also not represented.
Tabitha said it was not normal for Tecra to be transferring huge amounts of money ‘to a 60-year-old man’.
She admitted that she didn’t know why Tecra was sending the money but it was not a normal occurrence.
“In our culture, men send the money, not the other way round. Not usual for an older man to be receiving huge amounts of money from a young girl,” she said.
Tecra was 29 years old when she met her death.
