Kenyan and Ugandan businesspeople using the Malaba and Busia border crossings might soon have a new choice for transporting their goods.
This comes as Kenya and Uganda are set to launch a one-stop border post at the Suam border point in Trans Nzoia along the Kenya-Uganda border.
“In a couple of weeks, President Museveni and I will be launching a one-stop border post in Suam,” President William Ruto said.
Ruto was speaking on Tuesday during the official opening of the 3rd sitting of the 3rd session of the 5th East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The Suam border post, funded by the African Finance Development Bank and supported by China State Engineering Construction Corporation, will centralize immigration, Customs, security, and sanitary inspections, improving efficiency in transporting and clearing goods.
The project also includes upgrading the Suam-Bukwo-Kapchorwa road, which is aimed at modernizing the Suam crossing and boosting the local economy while alleviating congestion at the primary Busia and Malaba border facilities.
Speaking at the EALA sitting, President Ruto attributed the project’s success to the policies and legislation championed by EALA, which have addressed barriers hindering regional integration.
“Our customs union is on the move, with this Assembly creating legislative frameworks to establish a common external tariff, uniform customs rules and procedures, and common rules of origin,”he said.
This collaborative project aims to enhance trade between the two neighboring countries.
The upgraded post will bring together immigration, customs, security, and sanitation checks in one central location.
