Clan elders surrendered five AK47 rifles to police in a gesture to show their cooperation in the war against crime.
Cases of clan fighting, terrorism, and poaching are rampant in the area amid police operations to tame the trend.
Police said the group surrendered the five weapons with five empty magazines and 43 live ammunitions to multi-agency security teams in the Mandera North subcounty.
Security officials are battling different forms of crime in the area and such weapons are linked to the same.
Police said the Degodia elders in the area led in the surrendering of the weapons on Monday, March 4 as a sign of cooperation.
The security officers said the weapons will be subjected to ballistic tests as part of efforts to establish if they have been used in any form of crime.
This comes amid ongoing operations in the area targeting such weapons and terror gangs at large.
However, it is not clear where the group sourced the weapons.
The government has been running a campaign to encourage those with illegal weapons to surrender them.
As part of efforts to address the menace of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, regional states have been marking their firearms with unique numbers.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said by May 2023, the National Police Service (NPS) had marked 98 per cent of its firearms stock, while the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) had achieved a 70 per cent marking rate.
Kenya has also made significant strides in enhancing physical security in conflict-prone areas, capacity building for law enforcement agencies, and investing in modern technologies for border surveillance to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, he said.
The weapons contribute to banditry, terrorism, transnational crimes and criminal gangs.
"The illicit trade in small arms knows no borders and respects no laws, making it imperative for us to strengthen our collaborative efforts at both regional and international levels," Omollo said.
The region where the weapons were surrendered is close to the Kenya-Somalia border, which is facing several security challenges.
For instance, al Shabaab terrorists cross the border and attack at will before escaping back to Somalia.
There is an ongoing operation in the area to address the menace.
