Kenyans on Thursday learnt of the shocking news of the death of the former State House Comptroller Lawrence Lenayapa.

Lenayapa died on Thursday morning.

He served as the State House comptroller during former President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime from 2013 to 2018.

President William Ruto joined other leaders in eulogising him as a dedicated civil servant.

"My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ambassador Lawrence Lenayapa who has passed away. The country has lost a dedicated public servant," President William Ruto said in a message on his X platform.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and their loved ones at this time. Rest In Peace, Lawrence."

Former Treasury CS Ukur Yattani mourned Lenayapa:

"My condolences to the family of Amb Lawrence Lenayapa following his passing this morning. May Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace and give solace to the family," 

A State House Comptroller is the chief accounting officer and secretary to the president.

However, the roles of the State House Comptroller vary in every regime depending on how the President wants the office run.

But who was Lawrence Lenayapa

Although the holder of the seat is a high-ranking civil servant and a person who works closely with the President, Lenayapa's personal and family details have been kept out of the limelight.

His career started when he worked as a District Commissioner in Baringo and Kiambu.

Lenayapa was then Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources before he was appointed the State House Comptroller.

He served as the Stet House Comptroller for five years before he was later deployed to the Netherlands in 2018 as the ambassador.

Lenayapa was in charge of management, transactions, reporting, auditing and training at the State House.

He was expected to maintain a system of accounting policies and procedures.

Lenayapa in his role supervised accounting staff and operations involving employee training, development, termination and performance evaluations.

Lenayapa also worked to ensure that former President Uhuru achieved his promises and agenda to Kenyans.

He was tasked to work with the president’s doctor to ensure that health checks were done as scheduled.

Lenayapa was also in charge of the catering department to ensure that the required diet was always available.

Lenayapa worked as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

He led Kenya's delegation to various other international organizations in the country.
