Three men are fighting for their lives in hospital after they were struck by lightning while grazing cattle in Kileleshwa village, Narok South subcounty.

One of the victims is recuperating at Longisa Hospital in Bomet county. The other two are admitted to Narok County Referral Hospital.

Narok South deputy county commissioner Felix Kisalu said they were grazing cattle on the farm of Jonathan Letina, when lightning struck.

“They were first rushed to Ololulunga Subcounty Hospital but were referred. They were complaining of chest and back pains,” he said.

Kisalu urged residents to keep off areas prone to lightning and schools to instal lightning arresters.

Last year, three people lost their lives after they were struck by lightning in the same location.

Residents have urged the government to intervene and instal arresters.

Information from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention shows that lightning strikes can be controlled by getting off from elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges or peaks.

Residents have been advised not to lie flat on the ground but to crouch down in a ball-like position with the head tucked and hands over the ears so they have minimal contact with the ground.

They have been told not to shelter under isolated trees during the rainy season as it increases chances of being struck by lightning.
