WhatsApp recently rolled out the ability to have two different accounts on a single device.

According to WhatsApp, the move is to improve the user chatting experience with the ability to add multiple WhatsApp accounts within a single WhatsApp app.

Meta-owned WhatsApp announced the introduction of multiple accounts feature for Android users in October last year getting rid of having multiple devices for different accounts.

“We are introducing the ability to have two WhatsApp accounts logged in at the same time. Helpful for switching between accounts – such as your work and personal – now you no longer need to log out each time, carry two phones, or worry about messaging from the wrong place,” Meta said in October.

How to register

To register the second account, you will need a second phone number and a SIM card, or a device that accepts multi-SIM.

Your active account will be the one currently logged into, while your other phone number will not be active because is not used currently.

WhatsApp says that to see the content, one just needs to switch to the account, as the idle accounts will still get alerts.

Like the analog way of customizing profiles, users who have two accounts logged onto a device will have the ability to customize each profile by setting a picture and about text, notification settings as well as privacy settings.

At present, the feature is only available for Android users and supports two accounts.

To set up a second account

First, ensure that your WhatsApp application is up to date, if not, update from your app store.

Once your app is updated, open WhatsApp on your device, navigate the settings menu, click on the account then add the account.

Enter your phone number in international phone number format and tap done or next, then tap OK to receive your 6-digit registration code through SMS or phone call.

Enter the registration code to complete the registration.

Set up your new profile, enter your name, and then tap Next. You can also add a profile photo and fill in the about field.

To switch between accounts, go to more options at the top-right of the home screen, then tap switch accounts.

Removing account

If you want to remove one account, go to Settings, then Account and tap Remove account.

Tap confirm that you want to remove this account from your device.

Removing an account only takes it off the device one is currently using and the account’s groups and channels remain unaffected.

However, one loses any messages or data not backed up.

To delete an account completely, go to Settings, then Account and select Delete account.
