Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has urged the government to honour the late Kelvin Kiptum by naming a road, stadium or building after him.

Cherargei said the honour will be in remembrance of his World Record and his participation in athletics.

The Senator proposed that Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet be renamed after Kiptum.

"We are proposing that Kamariny Stadium from where he comes from in Elgeyo Marakwet be named after him," he said.

Speaking at a candle-lighting event for the late Kiptum at KICC on Thursday night, Cherargei also thanked the government for giving Kiptum a state burial.

"The state burial is an honour to him and many of us who were his fans, lawmakers and many of friends across the world and Kenya," he said.

"We are aware the government continues to support his family, the government constructed a house for Kiptum’s widow and is in the process of building another house for his parents."

Cherargei also challenged Kenyan athletes to break records in honour of Kiptum in the next competition that will soon be held in Paris.

He said that Kiptum’s demise was not only a loss for the sports fraternity but also for most of the people who believe in sports as a source of income for many young people.

The lawmaker said that most believed that Kiptum would still dominate the marathon world for the next 10 years.

Cherargei said that it had been a big loss to the athletics world because they had lost another athlete from his home place.

"Even where I come from we have also lost another legend called Rono, who within 11 days was able to break three world records and died at the age of 72," he said.

Cherargei urged the lawmakers to remember athletes, sportsmen and women to celebrate them in a better way.

"We want to ensure that any person who is in sports gets value for what they are doing in this country," he said.

"We need to see how we can partner with brand Kenya so that when our athletes, footballers,  rugby players, volleyballers, basketballers, tennis players and many others play across the country they can be given tax relief as they continue to fly our flag up."

Kiptum will be buried at his farm near Naiberi in Uasin Gishu County today.

President Ruto alongside other leaders and Sports coaches are expected to attend.
