Nairobi South B residents have called upon Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene on alleged land grabbing in the estate.

The residents who staged a protest on Friday said that the county should intervene and take a stand on the matter.

Led by their area MCA Waithera Chege, they vowed to protect the land which was earmarked for market construction.

"The reason why we are here is to let everyone know that public land belongs to the people and it will be protected," she said.

" I'm calling upon Governor Sakaja to join us in fighting against land grabbing. We were elected in office to represent the people's voice and they have spoken,"

"As leaders, we need to join hands and protect this land. If the land goes, South B will go down history as one of the wards with no market space for traders."

James Maina, Chairman of the South B shopping centre traders noted that the contested land was meant to be a safe place for traders.

"Many traders in the South B sell along the roadside because we don't have a market. This land was meant to be the grounds where the market was to be constructed but the plans have now been jeopardised," he said.

"If we let this land go, traders will suffer in case they are evicted on the roadside. Where will our people go or get their daily bread?"

The chairman called on Governor Sakaja to move on the ground and join them in fighting against land grabbing.

Business activities came to a standstill in South B on Friday morning as residents took to the streets in a protest against alleged land grabbing.

The contested land, earmarked for the construction of a market, became the focal point of their protest.

Carrying placards with messages, the residents called for President William Ruto’s intervention to address the situation.

“Stop land corruption. Let’s expose land grabbing, our future is in danger,” women were heard chanting.

Men blew whistles and joined in the protest.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a letter dated September 19, 2023, had notified the Nairobi government of a probe about the alleged land fraud.

The DCI requested the county to furnish them with copies of survey plans, minutes of allocation, beacon certificates, letter of allotment and any other information that may assist in their investigations.

A petition was brought to the county assembly planning and housing committee on the matter

“That the modern market would benefit residents mostly by increasing employment opportunities, increasing quality of production, creating an environment for healthy competition and increasing consumer status,” the petition reads.

In the petition signed by more than 400 South B residents, the people were urging the Nairobi government and other stakeholders to dismantle the unauthorised structure under construction on the contested land.

The petition also wanted City Hall to secure the disputed land and maintain its guardianship on behalf of the traders and the larger Nairobi community.

It also sought the intervention of the National Land Commission and relevant organisations to provide the county with the necessary deed plans to facilitate the resolution of the dispute.

The Nairobi County Assembly directed the executive to immediately repossess the piece of land in South B.

However, the land remains unoccupied up to date
