United States International University Africa (USIU-A) Martials' coach Tom Lagat believes they are still in the mix for a KRU Championship playoff slot.
“We sit ninth with eight points from six games. There is still a slim chance of a playoff slot but we are taking one game at a time. The pressure has now gone down,” said the tactician.
Lagat said they are confident of retaining their KRU Championship status after recording two consecutive wins, which lifted them from the bottom of the log.
They visit eighth-placed University of Eldoret’s (UOE) Trojans on Saturday.
10th-placed Mombasa RFC have eight points while the University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine are bottom of the table with seven points.
They are targeting a bonus point win against Trojans in a game that was moved from December 16.
"We have studied how they play. We have come up with strategies on how we can stop them. I know they are dangerous at home but this is a game that will determine our season. We want a bonus point win,” said Lagat.
They needed a last-minute try to beat former Kenya Cup winners Mean Machine 18-15.
Martials’ other win was on February 4 when they downed Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s (JKUAT) Cougars 26-19.
“We showed composure in that game and minimised our errors. That is how we managed to get the crucial win,” noted Lagat.
Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST), under coach John Asila, lead the standings with 29 points, same as second-placed Daystar Falcons, while South Coast Pirates are third with 27 points. Impala are fourth with 23 points.
