Safer is sexy: Kisumu activist promotes safe sex on Valentine's Day

Human Rights Activist Sammy Morara stole the show to advocate for safe sex as the World marks Valentine's day, February 14.

As loved ones celebrate Valentine's Day, a human rights activist in Kisumu has taken advantage of the day to sensitize youths on the importance of safe sex.

Sam Morara, dressed in a red trouser, with a condom-made outfit as a top, and condom bangles, moved along Kisumu streets stressing the importance of using condoms.

Locals looked at him amazed as others took pictures of him.

Morara told the Star that due to the rise in HIV and Aids, he decided to get out this Valentine's to sensitize the youths and advise them on the importance of safe sex.

With a placard written 'Safer is Sexy', he said the young people should value protection and not be careless as they may contract sexual infections.

"Am out here to sensitize the youths that they should use presentations such as condoms especially today that is valentines," he said.

The Star met him outside the Property house where the county government through the tourism department had organized a half-day celebration dubbed 'Lakeside valentines Celebrations to foster love and togetherness.

The event involved tree planting at the Impala Sanctuary early in the morning, gifting of flowers to locals within Prosperity Square, giveaways, and concluded with a special cake cutting.

The chief guest of the event Kisumu first lady Mama Dorothy Nyong’o said even as they celebrate today, young people across should know and remember that love is not only about romance.

She took the opportunity to appeal to authorities to design modalities to combat rising femicide cases in the country.

She noted that security is a collective responsibility of society and women should be protected for posterity.

She also appealed to parents to educate and sensitize their children on the need to coexist with the opposite gender.

The County CEC Tourism Faridah Salim reiterated her sentiments saying that it was a collective responsibility of the society both men and women to protect the young children both male and female.

She also called on parents to get proactive in the lives of their children.

"Sadly, we keep losing young girls and we hope that the concerted efforts that have been put in place will ensure that this matter becomes a thing of the past," she said.
