A condolence book for the World Marathon Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum has been set up at Riadha House, Nairobi.

Kiptum, 24, died Sunday night in a tragic road accident along Eldoret-Kaptagat road.

His Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizamana also perished in the accident.

A lady passenger who sustained injuries in the crash has since been discharged from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Detectives are expected to record a statement from her to help piece together what might have caused the accident.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said Kiptum was the one driving at the time of the accident.

Athletics Kenya said the condolence book at Riadha House is for the athletics fraternity to pay their respects to the world champion.

Kiptum's family is yet to set a date for a postmortem but an autopsy was conducted on his coach on Wednesday.

The family, however, declined to make the findings public.

The family has set his burial for February 24.

Kiptum broke the Marathon World Record on October 8, 2023, in Chicago.

He clocked 2:00:35 at Grant Park to eclipse the previous record set by compatriot Eliud Kipchoge of 2:01:09 at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

Kiptum had set his eyes on becoming the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours at the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14.

Kipchoge achieved this feat in Vienna, Austria albeit in an unofficial race dubbed Ineos 1:59 Challenge by clocking a remarkable time of 1:59:40:2 on October 12, 2019.
