Two people have died in a grisly road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos County.

The accident happened in the Syokimau area within the Mlolongo division on Monday.

Police said the accident occurred after the lorry rammed into the bus from behind pushing it into a ditch.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said at least two people died on the spot in the incident.

Mudavadi said the accident involved a lorry and a passenger bus belonging to the Embasava Sacco.

Both the vehicles, according to the police, were moving from Nairobi general direction towards Mombasa general direction when the accident occurred

"Due to the impact, the bus was pushed off the road and landed into a ditch on its left side body on the left side of the road as one faces Mombasa's general direction. As a result, one unknown female adult passenger sustained a deep cut on the head and another unknown female pedestrian sustained a deep cut on the head, fractured left hand and both died on the spot," Mudavadi said.

The police boss said eighteen other passengers sustained chest, head, leg, knee, back, hand and jaw injuries.

They were all rushed to the hospital where they were left undergoing treatment.

Mudavadi said the bodies were moved to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem examination.

The wreckage was towed to Athi River police station awaiting inspection.
