Leaders mourn tragic loss of Marathon Star Kiptum and Coach in road accident

Kenyan leaders have expressed their heartfelt condolences following the tragic passing of Kelvin Kiptum, the esteemed World Marathon record holder.

Kiptum passed away on Sunday night in a road accident at Kaptagat on the Elgeyo Marakwet - Ravine road.

He was in the company of his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana who also died.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula expressed his condolences noting that Kiptum's rising and shining star has been cruelly truncated through a tragic road accident.

“What a tragedy! As a young new marathon world record holder Kiptum was the obvious heir to the majestic Eliud Kipchoge,” he said.

Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that Kiptum’s passing at only 24 has left a void in the world of marathon running, where he was just beginning to showcase his exceptional talent.

“His remarkable achievements, including surpassing Eliud Kipchoge's record during the 2023 Chicago Marathon, marked him as a rising star in the sport. Alongside Kipchoge, Kelvin was poised to represent Kenya in the upcoming Paris Olympics, embodying the nation's formidable presence in marathon running,” he stated.

The CS noted that the loss of Kelvin and his coach, Rwanda's Gervais Hakizimana, is deeply felt throughout the athletic community.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga noted that Kiptum’s death was devastating news, terming him "a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon."

“My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity. Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero,” he said.

“Just when the stage was set for the biggest marathon battle! Rest well champ,” Langata MP Phelix Oduor alias Jalang’o said.

Kimilili MP Didimus Barasa highlighted that Kiptum’s remarkable achievements inspired countless and his kindness endeared him to all.

"My thoughts are with his loved ones and the athletics community."

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang said "Kenyans are speechless after learning about the untimely passing of Kiptum and his coach Hakizimana.'

“May the Almighty God grant strength and comfort to his family during this difficult time. RIP Champion!” he said.
