Five years ago, the family of Joseph Irungu alias Jowie was uncertain about the outcome of the murder case their son was embroiled in.

Then, they were hopeful that their son was innocent.

But on Friday, the High Court found Jowie guilty of murdering businesswoman Monica Kimani.  His ex-fiancé former TV presenter Jackie Maribe was acquitted.

Justice Grace Nzioka said the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Irungu murdered Kimani.

In an exclusive interview with NTV five years ago, Jowie's mother said she felt the pain Monica's parents were going through.

She apologised to the family of Monica if her son would be found guilty of her murder.

"Nawahurumia kama mzazi na naskia ile uchungu ya mtu kupoteza mtoto wake but ile kitu inanishangaza nashindwa kweli ni mtoto wangu alifanya, hio ndio swali najiuliza na ningependa tu Mungu afunue nijue ukweli ndio niweze kuheal kwa sababu niko na shida," she said.

(As a mother, I feel the pain of losing a child. But what puzzles me is whether my son did it. I ask myself that question. I ask God to unfold the truth so that I can heal because I am going through so much pain).

During the interview, Jowie's family described him as a Christian and a person who loved the Church.

His father revealed that Jowie was a member of the choir when growing up.

Jowie is a gospel musician and has released several songs with his latest one being on Friday which was uploaded on his YouTube channel hours after he was found guilty.

In the song dubbed Nakuabudu, Jowie says he is returning to God while crying at his feet.

"Mikononi mwako Yesu, narejea. Miguuni mwako Yesu, nalilia," Irungu sings.

Jowie has since been taken into custody awaiting his sentencing on March 8, 2024.

Even as Kenyans awaits his sentencing,  Jowie, through his advocate Professor Hassan Nandwa said he will be appealing against the decision of the High Court.

He said even though they respect the judgement, they disagree with her findings.
