Police in Naivasha are investigating an incident where a trader lost over Sh400,000 to thugs in one of the town's streets.

The trader had withdrawn the cash from a bank and proceeded to a shop near Naivas Kubwa supermarket when the thugs broke into the car and made away with the cash.

Drama unfolded outside the supermarket after the trader found the car's rear window broken and the cash missing.

A witness, Dan Kimani, said this was not the first time that thugs had broken into vehicles near the supermarket and made away with cash and personal effects.

“The incident happened openly but no one, even the traders who sell their wares nearby, noticed the ongoing robbery,” he said.

A senior police officer who declined to be named confirmed the incident, saying that they were seeking CCTV footage from nearby shops as part of their investigations.

Meanwhile, scores of passengers escaped death narrowly after a lorry lost control and rammed into a fleet of vehicles along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Wednesday evening.

During the incident near Raini centre, some 15km from Naivasha town, six people were including the driver of the lorry were injured.

Following the accident, some passersby looted the lorry that was ferrying assorted livestock products before police moved to the scene and contained the situation.

The accident occurred when the lorry that was heading to Naivasha from Nairobi lost control after hitting several speed bumps on a section of the road.

According to James Kabono from Naivasha Road Safety Group, the lorry ended up ramming into four other vehicles before landing on the roadside.

Kabono said the driver of the lorry and one passenger in a personal car were seriously injured and rushed to hospitals in Naivasha.

“The lorry that was moving at high speed narrowly missed several vehicles including two buses before hitting another lorry and three cars,” he said.
