President William Ruto has said American technology company Oracle Corporation will set up a regional data centre in Kenya.

While noting that this will be the second such data centre in Africa, the President said Kenya continues to be a prime destination for international IT companies.

"Kenya will continue to facilitate technology companies seeking to set up their footprints in Africa. In line with the government’s strategy to lay 100,000km of fibre optic, provide digital jobs and digitise government services," he said.

The development comes after Ruto met the Oracle delegation led by Senior Vice-President (OCI Product and Industries) Scott Twaddle.

The President said the move underscores Oracle’s commitment to Africa and is aimed at driving government's digital transformation agenda, public institutions and businesses and start-ups in Kenya.

Leaders present during the meeting held on Wednesday in Nairobi included ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo and Principal Secretary John Kipchumba.
