Garissa airstrip will soon undergo major renovations to give a facelift to its runway which was constructed in 1984.
The national government and Garissa county will partner in the expansion and modernization of the airstrip with Governor Nathif Jama Adam's administration building the Terminal facility.
On Wednesday, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale who went for the site visit of the airstrip assured the Kenya Airports Authority of the steadfast support of his ministry in the intended major refurbishment of Garissa Airstrip.
Duale said the upgrade will make the airstrip accommodate more aircraft and ease the transport of goods and people.
“We are here for only one purpose and we are here under the direction of the President who said we must do something about Garissa airstrip. We have arrangements with the Garissa county government and the Ministry of Transport," he said.
The Defense boss highlighted that the expansion of the Runway will be from 1.2km to 1.5 Km, with a security fence, a car park, a modern gate, aprons and a modern terminal building.
This will be the first time the Airstrip has received such a level of renovation.
Duale was accompanied by Governor Nathif Jama Adam, Transport PS Mohamed Daghar his counterpart of Defence Patrick Mariru, vice chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi among others.
Garissa, which has been the headquarters of the expansive Northeastern region has been relying on the current rudimentary airstrip for four decades, limiting residents’ travel options.
