Kisumu Day have recruited heavily ahead of this year’s Kenya Secondary Secondary School Sports Association games.
Last week, the school recruited 25 players during the trials that attracted 450 students.
The former Nyanza regional defending champions are seeking to recapture their position in football circles, both in the country and the region.
Coach Andrew Aroka said they recruited seven midfielders, four goalkeepers, seven forwards, and seven defenders, who will join Form One. The school holds trials every year.
“The purpose for recruitment of students joining Form One is to have the continuity of the institution’s football tradition,” Aroka said.
“We have lined up tournaments that we hope to use to test our newly-reinforced squad.”
Last year, Kisumu Day fell 7-6 to Agoro Sare High School on post-match penalties to miss out on the national school games in Kakamega.
Benjamin Oyoo, the teacher in charge of football at Kisumu Day, hopes the newly-recruited students will adapt to their style of play.
“They are very talented and we are optimistic of reviving our good old days. Our target is not only to feature at the East Africa Games but also emerge victorious,” Oyoo said.
“The future of football at Kisumu Day is very bright and we will continue to nurture players besides academics,” he added.
Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla, one of Kisumu Day’s alumnus, is said to be on his way to north Africa to join one of the region’s top sides.
