Azimio has accused President William Ruto's administration of protecting DRC rebels in Nairobi and warned the dalliance will deepen tension between the two countries.

National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi responding to the launch of a new Congolese military alliance in Nairobi, accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of facilitating the rebels to destabilise a friendly nation.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio chief Raila Odinga are close allies of DRC President Felix Tshisekedi whom the rebels are seeking to dethrone.

DRC’s elections are scheduled for December 20.

On Friday, Congolese politicians and groups including the M23 rebels who have seized eastern Congo, and Corneille Nangaa, a former Congo election commission chief, launched the Congo River Alliance in Nairobi.

Speaking at the launch, Nangaa, sanctioned by the US for corruption and obstructing the 2018 election, said the alliance would bring together various Congolese armed groups, militias and social and political organisations.

The new alliance is an additional concern in a region where insecurity has persisted for decades, fuelled by ethnic rivalries and a tussle over land and resources with regional implications.

In retaliation, DRC on Saturday recalled her ambassador to Kenya "for consultations".

Speaking at his Parliament office, Wandayi said it was wrong for the government to entertain rebels of a friendly nation.

The Ugunja lawmaker added that it is suspect that the developments are coming at a time DRC is going to the ballot.

“We find it extremely disturbing that while DRC is planning to hold elections, Kenya would allow well-known Congolese rebels and armed militants to announce, right at the heart of Nairobi, the launch a political-military alliance that includes M23 rebels and other armed groups, in order to destabilise DRC,” Wandayi said.

“Why was the head of M23 rebel movement allowed in Nairobi when Kenyan troops were battling his soldiers in eastern Congo? Is the Ruto regime double dealing in the DRC? Who allowed Mr Bisimiwa into the country and for what purpose?”

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi has however distanced the government from the Serena presser, saying the country has no hand in the outcome of the event.

In a statement on Friday, Mudavadi stated that the press conference was held in Nairobi on the grounds that Kenya allows freedom of the press for both its citizens and non-citizens.

President Ruto during a live interview with the local television stations on Sunday also waded into the diplomatic tiff defending the presence of the rebels in the country.

Ruto said he could not intervene as every country has its own democracy.

"If they [DRC] decide they want to recall their ambassador because a statement was issued in Nairobi that is their right," he said at State House.

"DRC wanted to know if we could arrest the people who released the statement but we said we cannot. We only arrest criminals and deal with them but not issuing statement.”

But according to Azimio, the government is treating the matter casually warning the country risks joining the ranks of nations working against interests of neighbours.

“We are concerned that Kenya Kwanza could slowly be becoming part of the global network of nations, individuals and institutions with extortionist and extractionist mindset and who thrive in chaos,” the Ugunja MP said.

“The Kenya Kwanza leadership owes this country and the whole world an explanation on the activities of DRC rebels who are operating in Nairobi.”

Wandayi’s remarks came hours after retired President Uhuru Kenyatta also denounced the Nairobi presser.

Uhuru, who is the Facilitator of the East African Community (EAC) led Nairobi Peace process said he was shocked by the developments.
