The Makueni County road accident death toll has risen to 13.

The number rose after another victim succumbed to injuries at Makueni Level 5 hospital where he was undergoing treatment early Monday.

Before the death, two other victims had died in hospital while undergoing treatment raising the number of deaths from ten to twelve.

These follow an early accident that occurred along Kikima - Kali - Machakos road within the county that led to ten deaths on Saturday.

Seven others, according to police, sustained injuries and were rushed to Mbooni subcounty hospital where they were admitted for medication.

The incident occurred in the Kwa Mbisu area in the Mbooni subcounty.

Sources said the 14-seater matatu had 17 passengers when the incident happened.

The driver of a 14-seater matatu that was headed to Machakos from Kikima is said to have lost control before landing in a ditch after it rolled several times.

The matatu was extensively damaged.

The bodies were removed from the wreckage and taken to the mortuary.

"It occurred today (Saturday) at around 6.30 pm at Nthungoni Red Sea Area along Kikima - Machakos Road involving a 14-seater matatu belonging to MAKOS sacco being driven by John Mutune Makenzi aged 52 years," Ole Napeiyan told the Star by phone shortly after the incident.
