SHOOTING

Police were Thursday pursuing gunmen who ambushed a herder and shot him dead in the Tot area, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

This is the latest such attack by gunmen in the area for livestock amid multi-agency operations.

The police said Kirotich Kilimo alias Loshakou Agoro, 28, was shot at Cheptingas grazing field and succumbed to the injuries in Endo Mission hospital.

Police fear there will be retaliation on the attack believed to have been perpetrated by gunmen from a neighbouring county.

There have been more deployments in the area to tame retaliation, police said.

Meanwhile, gunmen staged an attack on a construction site at the Kenya-South Sudan border prompting an exchange of fire.

The incident happened on Thursday and saw the military and other security agents being involved in an exchange of fire before the gang was repulsed.

The gunmen had targeted a lorry offloading materials at the construction site at Nadapal.

The motive of the incident is yet to be established, police said.

No casualties were reported on the Kenyan security team who suspected the attackers were Toposa raiders.

The raiders were repulsed back to South Sudan and two jungle hats and empty cases of AK47 rounds with South Sudanese marks recovered during clearance.

More security personnel were deployed to the resistive area to avert any more planned attacks.

Officials said the Kenyan- South Sudan liaison had been instructed to engage in talks to stop the move to disrupt the ongoing CSR projects which are beneficial to both countries.

The area is among those under operation by multi-agency teams to tame cases of deadly banditry.

Bandits at times cross from South Sudan and stage raids before fleeing with livestock.

Kenyan bandits also cross to South Sudan in retaliation, which continues playing out to the detriment of the locals.

The government is constructing security projects at the border to address such incidents, which have affected development in general.

This includes the construction of a security check border point.
