Chief Justice Martha Koome has been nominated in the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year (POTY) Awards 2023 polls.

The Chief Justice was nominated in the African Female Leader of the Year category.

Koome was nominated by a cross-section of readers and followers who responded to a call for nominations, distributed by the African Leadership Magazine media partners across the continent.

The nomination of Koome is consistent with ALM’s tradition of presenting the sides of the continent’s leadership achievements, which hardly finds placement on global media platforms.

“The African Female Leader of the Year Award is reserved for an African woman who has defied the odds and risen above the patriarchal systems in the continent to positively affect the continent and influence women to aspire for excellence in various fields,” ALM said.

Koome was nominated alongside Vice President of Benin Mariam Chabi Talata, Executive Director, UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima, the Chairman, of Standard Bank Group, South Africa Nonkululeko Nyembezi, and Managing Director, Lucara Diamonds, Botswana Naseem Lahri.

ALM has invited people to visit the website to participate in the voting process. Voting closes on December 14, 2023, at midnight (Central Africa Time).

Winners of the ALM Persons of the Year Awards for the year 2023 will be announced and invited to a formal presentation of the awards and other instruments of honour during the ALM Persons of the Year Awards Ceremony 2024.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held on February 22 – 23, 2024 at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which is also the headquarters of the African Union (AU).

Koome joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a High Court Judge where she served until 2011.

During that period, she was engaged in leadership and administrative roles within the High Court as the Resident Judge of the High Court in Nakuru and Kitale as well as the Head of the Land and Environment Division of the High Court at Nairobi, as it was then referred to.

She has also been actively engaged in multiple community service projects and promoted children and family matters through volunteer and pro bono services.

She is celebrated as a revolutionary jurist who participated in the law review process which gave rise to the Constitution of Kenya, in 2010.
